Celebrating Myanmar Tradition with Thingyan Festival at Network
The Thingyan festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year at Network International School Yangon. In the last week of Term 3, Thingyan Festival was held across the whole school, giving students the opportunity to learn about and bond with Myanmar culture and traditions while having fun.
Thingyan is one of the most popular festivals in Myanmar and is generally celebrated in April every year. It is also known as the water festival, as people celebrate by throwing water at each other to symbolise the washing away of the old year and the start of the new one.
At Network International School Yangon, the Thingyan festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year. In the last week of Term 3, Thingyan Festival was held across the whole school, and it was a grand celebration that included traditional dances and water play throughout Foundation Stage to Primary and Secondary schools. The festival was an excellent opportunity for the students to learn about and bond with Myanmar culture and traditions while having fun.
The festival began with the exciting activity of making the traditional Myanmar dessert Mont Lone Yay Baw in the Foundation Stage, followed by amazing performances from our talented students from F1 to Year 6 classes. There was dancing from different parts of Myanmar, including Chin, Karen and Kachin states. The students all showed lots of confidence with their graceful movements and intricate footwork in their colourful outfits. The atmosphere was vibrant and festive, with music and laughter filling the air.
After the performances, the water play began in Foundation Stage and Primary campuses, with students splashing water on each other and drenching everyone with water guns and buckets. At the same time, our Secondary students had so much fun with activities like making Thanakha lotion, learning traditional Myanmar Dance, and enjoying some traditional fun games with water. The teachers and parents also joined in the festivities, making the event even more memorable. What a great way to cool down at the end of a very busy term at Network!
We're so proud of our students and their commitment to preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage. The Thingyan Dance Festival was a fantastic opportunity for them to embrace the diverse tradition of our home Myanmar while having fun and making memories. It is also an important part of their education, where students are able to showcase their creativity and develop their sense of identity. We are very grateful for our school community's support and our Myanmar teachers' efforts in making this event a huge success.
Thank you all for your support, and we look forward to another fantastic Thingyang Festival next year.
