In Key Stage 3 (KS3), all of our students study three core languages: English, Burmese/Myanmar, and French. While English is our main language of instruction and Burmese connects students to our local context, French adds an important global dimension. Here’s why we believe it’s such a valuable subject to include.
Why a Broad, Holistic Curriculum Matters
We know that young people thrive when they’re exposed to a wide range of subjects and ways of thinking. A holistic curriculum helps students discover their interests, develop their strengths, and grow into well-rounded, adaptable individuals.
By learning across disciplines - whether it’s through science experiments, creative writing, physical activity, or language acquisition - students build confidence, empathy, and the ability to engage with the world in meaningful ways. We want our students to leave school not just knowing things, but knowing how to think, question, and connect. In Key Stage Three and at IGCSE we make a point of ensuring a wide-ranging and varied curriculum that exposes students to different disciplines and skill sets as part of kindling their interests.
Why Learning Languages Is So Valuable
Languages help us connect, across cultures, countries, and communities. For students growing up in a globalised world, learning a new language offers a powerful way to understand others' perspectives, broaden horizons, and develop cultural awareness.
But the benefits aren’t just social. Language learning also strengthens cognitive skills like memory, concentration, and problem-solving. It improves literacy and even supports performance in other subjects. In our international school community, where many students already speak more than one language, adding another to their repertoire is a natural and enriching part of their learning journey.
Why French?
So why French? There are lots of reasons we’ve chosen this as our modern foreign language. Together, they make a strong case for its relevance and value in today’s world.
For one, French is spoken by over 300 million people across the globe. It’s an official language in 29 countries and is used on five continents. France itself remains the most visited country in the world, and the ability to speak French opens doors to travel, work, and cultural exchange across Europe, Canada, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.
Here in Southeast Asia, French has a long and lasting influence. From Vietnam to Cambodia and Laos, French has played a key role in the region’s history, and its legacy is still present today in education, diplomacy, and cultural life. French continues to be used in government, academic, and business settings across the region.
For students thinking about their futures, French also offers exciting opportunities in higher education. French universities are gaining increasing recognition on the global stage, offering high-quality programmes, often at lower costs than universities in other Western countries. Many of these institutions offer degrees taught partly or fully in English, while still encouraging language learning and international exchange.
We’re also fortunate to have strong local connections that enrich our French programme. The French Institute in Yangon is an active cultural centre that hosts events, screenings, exhibitions, and language opportunities. Our school has ongoing links with the Institute, giving students the chance to connect with the French-speaking community here in Yangon and experience the language in authentic, meaningful ways.
Learning French gives students access to a rich cultural heritage, from the worlds of art, literature, and philosophy to food, fashion, and cinema. But more than that, it gives them practical tools to navigate and participate in a global society.
Choosing to include French in our KS3 curriculum isn’t just about language; it’s about offering students access to the world. It complements the multilingual nature of our community, strengthens cognitive and academic skills, and opens doors to future travel, study, and career opportunities.
