Building on Excellence: Extending Literacy Success into Secondary

Building on Excellence: Extending Literacy Success into Secondary

At Network Secondary, we believe that a strong foundation in literacy is a journey, not a destination. While many of our families are already familiar with the exceptional results of the Accelerated Reader (AR) programme within our Primary phase, we are proud to demonstrate how we are building upon those firm foundations to ensure our Secondary students continue to excel as they head towards their IGCSEs.

By scaling this established and highly effective programme into Key Stage 3 and beyond, we are ensuring a seamless transition and a consistent, data-driven approach to every student's academic development.

A Proven Foundation: From Primary to Secondary

For those families who have moved up from Network Primary, the STAR Reader assessment will be a familiar friend. By continuing this standardised assessment in the Secondary phase, we maintain a clear, longitudinal view of each child’s reading progress.

Almost every student has now completed their baseline assessment for the year. This continuity allows us to track reading ages with precision, ensuring that the momentum gained in Primary is never lost. This data is shared across the entire faculty, helping teachers in every subject, from Science to History, tailor their materials to the specific reading levels of their students.

Scaling Success: The Year 9 Transformation

The power of a "through-school" approach to literacy is best evidenced by our current Year 9 cohort. As they stand on the threshold of their IGCSE programmes, we are seeing the direct results of sustained, monitored reading.

In just five months, Year 9 students have, on average, achieved literacy and vocabulary progress equivalent to two years of standard growth. This extraordinary leap proves that when the rigorous framework established in Primary is matured for the Secondary environment, the academic rewards are immense.

Bridging the "Vocabulary Gap"

As students progress through Secondary, the complexity of the curriculum increases. Research highlights a daunting "vocabulary gap": by Year 11, students who do not read frequently can be behind their peers by over 1,000,000 words.

By evolving our use of AR, we are taking a proactive, strategic measure to bridge this gap. We are ensuring that the "Network Student" is not just a proficient reader, but a sophisticated communicator equipped for the linguistic demands of GCSEs and future university life.

"The data generated from STAR Assessments is a critical diagnostic engine. By building on the habits formed in Primary, we can identify specific areas for growth and develop bespoke strategies for every individual student." - Tr Mandie, Head of English & Drama

Consistency in the Library

Our library remains the heart of this mission. To maintain the systems students learned in their earlier years, our librarian, Tr Honey, has been meticulously labelling our Secondary collection with ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) levels. This allows for a smooth transition where students can immediately identify books that match their reading level, encouraging progress without the frustration of picking materials that are too simple or overly complex.

Collective Achievement and Celebration

To keep the spark of reading alive, we have adapted the competitive spirit of the Primary years for our older students:

  • House & Tutor Group Leaderboards: Encouraging collective pride and healthy rivalry.
  • Individual Commendations: Publicly recognising significant milestones in word counts and comprehension.
  • Targeted Interventions: Using AR data to run specialised reading circles for those who need an extra boost to reach their age-related benchmarks.

A Unified Support System

The transition of Accelerated Reader into Secondary is most effective when supported by our parents. We encourage parents to continue the engagement you may have started in the Primary years by using the Renaissance Home Connect portal.

By displaying the programme posters at home and encouraging children to complete their book quizzes, parents are helping us maintain a unified support system. Together, we are ensuring that the literacy success of the Primary years is not just maintained, but accelerated, as our students move toward their bright futures.
