Key Stage 1
Year 1 and Year 2 comprise Key Stage 1 of the British
Curriculum.
Subjects
Literacy : Each day the children have a literacy
lesson which is made up of three strands- word level,
sentence level and text level. They also have additional
Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) sessions which relate specifically
to our reading scheme.
Mathematics : The children have daily maths
lessons which cover four main strands; Shape and Space,
Number, Problem Solving and Data Handling. We focus on
mental skills and use games to consolidate concepts.
Theme
Work :comprises a large part of the schedule and covers
important core curriculum areas which include the subject
areas of Geography, Religious Education, Science, History, and Design & Technology. which
are taught mostly through theme lessons. Some of this theme
work takes place in individual classes, some takes place in
theme centres and some during theme days. Other areas of
learning are also integrated into theme work as appropriate
Science : children learn and use scientific
investigation methods to explore life processes, physical
processes and materials.
History : children explore their place in time by
finding about things from the past (e,g. toys). They learn
how we find out about things from the past.
Geography
: children explore their place in space by finding out
about their local area and comparing it to other places
around the world.
Religious Education : Children develop an
understanding and appreciation of
various religions and
cultures.
PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education):
Children are encouraged to develop healthy habits,
responsible behaviour and social skills.
Information & Communication Technology : We have a
well-resourced computer room where each child has time to
develop their computer skills.
Physical Education : The curriculum areas cover
dance, games, gymnastics and swimming. The children travel
to a well equipped local gymnasium and to a nearby swimming
pool for these parts of the curriculum.
Design
& Technology : The children explore how things work and
participate in designing and making things for themselves.
Music : The children listen and respond to music.
They sing songs and play instruments to include a wide range
of music. They participate in regular school assembly
performances and in our annual Christmas Concert.
Art : The children explore using many different
media and materials to create a range of different art and
craft projects. The focus is on creativity and enjoyment.
